Chapter Six

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF CHINESE AND WESTERN MEDICINE

ADVISING MODERN WESTERNERS on how to take advantage of Chinese medicine is somewhat like what a Western health care worker might face trying to educate those in an emerging nation about how to take advantage of Western medicine. Just as Western medicine is a complex mixture of many different practices within one underlying theory of health and disease, so too is Chinese medicine. I have already discussed how the theory of health and disease that underlies Chinese medicine differs from that of Western medicine; I now want to explain some practical details of how to go about using this healing approach that is new to the Western world.

Up to this point I have only discussed acupuncture and acupressure, as these practices are the ones out of the many within the broad umbrella of Chinese medicine that have become most popular here in the West. But offering advice on how to get the most out of Chinese medicine by focusing on acupuncture/acupressure alone would be like the health care worker in the emerging nation focusing only on modern surgery. In addition to acupuncture and acupressure, the use of Chinese herbs is of great importance in Chinese medicine, just as the use of drugs combined with surgery constitutes the cornerstones of Western medicine. By also considering the use of Chinese herbs, we greatly expand our understanding of what Chinese medicine has to offer.
